Friends, they are there for you when you need it the most. At least one would hope so. I am sure we have all at one point had some friends who didn’t really have our back, they were friends in name only, but they weren’t committed to the relationship. But when you find a close friend or if your luck a circle of friends it is like a new family.

“There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.”

Proverbs 18:24 NLT

As we dig deeper in our relationship with Jesus, we must also build up our relationships with other believers. These people we call brothers and sisters in the faith are vital in our walk. They must be willing to call us out when we make bad choices. They must be ready to encourage us when we make good choices. We must be willing to accept both the good and corrective comments without making excuses. These friends will build us up.

Other friends who gossip, tell us discouraging things, put down our faith, or are living a life that isn’t very healthy can be poisonous to our faith. There is two ways it can go, either you lift them up and they accept Christ, or they pull you down to the muck they are wallowing in. So, should we cut ourselves off from these friends? No not always, we need to show them the love of Jesus in our lives. But if you find that their lifestyle is pulling you away from your relationship then it might be time to take a step back and revaluate. If they are not willing to do things you are doing but really expect you to follow them they may only be looking for followers and not a friend.

I am glad god has given me a solid group of men I meet with weekly who build each other up. Small groups are a great way to encourage each other and make solid friendships in your faith.

Do you have a story how you friend in the faith built or is building you up? Let’s encourage one another by sharing our stories below.

Jesus, I ask that each follower has a close friend in the faith. Let us not be pulled down by ‘friends’ who are looking for followers. We want to be effective in reaching our friends and be the one loving them as you love them. They matter to you Jesus so they matter to me, and I am ready to put my words into actions. Amen
