There are some who write off the Holy Spirit as something Jesus promised the early church and now he is just around but doesn’t do much. The gifts of the Spirit promised in the New Testament in their eyes does not apply. But I, like many others disagree and believe that the Holy Spirit, who is part of the triune God, wants to be in a relationship with us the same as we have with the other two members of the triune, Jesus and the Father. You can’t have one without the others.

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”

Philippians 2:13 NLT

Where does the desire and power come from that God is giving you? The Holy Spirit is in each and every believer. He is a part of the trinity of God, so the Holy Spirit is God, yet has his own function (I know that might be the wrong word) within the Trinity. Jesus promised He would send a helper to guide us and empower us while He was making an intersession and a place for us. So, when we ask Jesus into our lives He does reside there in the person of the Holy Spirit, his essence. So, the desire and power we seek is within us and ready to be tapped into if we dig deep into prayer and in His Word.

Just as Jesus never forces you to accept His salvation, the Holy Spirit has the same respect for you. He is willing to work through you and with you to fulfil the mission, heal the sick, do miracles but we must be willing to ask him and submit to his leading. We need to recognize that the Holy Spirit resides in us and that in our own strength we will continue to fall, but if we rely on him we can do amazing things in our faith.

Many of have an earthy desire to see the people around us find Jesus. We need to ask the Holy Spirit to give us a deep desire, something that bubbles deep within us that yearns for the lost. That we might see the lost people around us as Jesus does, not condemned with no future but a people with a chance for redemption. This passion we need isn’t one that overwhelms us, but one that pushes us to action. If we ask for this desire or passion for the lost he will provide it, don’t be shocked when he provides opportunities to display your newfound passion. He will give you the strength to push forward and reach the need of those you speak with. He may show you insights into that person’s life you should not know. He may give you an encouraging word that will lift their hearts. He may expose a deep sin or unforgiveness that when confronted will bring them to their knees.

We need to dig deeper in the Holy Spirit. We cannot ignore his existence. He is living with us, in us, supporting us. So, let’s not ignore him any longer, embrace the helper sent by Jesus. Pray for a strong desire to reach the lost, pray for strength to be men and women of action, and pray for opportunities to reach the lost.

Jesus, we thank you for the promised Holy Spirit that lives in our lives. I pray that we will connect with him for a strong desire for the lost, strength to talk to them and opportunities to share what you have done for them. Give us wisdom that is beyond earthly possibilities so we may show them that you truly do care about them and their well being. They matter to you Jesus, so they matter to me and I want to do something about it. Amen
