Create Your Own Luck

Desires, Ambitions, Potential, Purpose, Luck, Destiny

Does anyone feel weighed down by these words? I used to.But not anymore.

I used to think about the reasons of anyone’s existence or what is the purpose of life. What are ambitions for? What is my potential? Is everything destined?

Conflict is the essence of the self.I’ve decided to shut down this conflicting voice within myself which talks about the factors like Luck, Fate or Destiny.I think fate is a self-made web that we entangle ourselves in, probably to justify the events of our life. It’s just an answer to the question ‘Why me?’ But now I’d answer it with ‘Why not?’. I’d ask myself to look at the decisions which I took and will try to see the role they played in getting me to the situation I’m in.

“There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be…”
~ John Lennon, in “All you need is love”

I’m sorry Mr. Lennon, I disagree. Or maybe I’d like to interpret the lyrics in a different context now.

I feel all this talk of fate and believing in it blindly in a way shows that the person wants to avoid his responsibilities. A strong person will brave every storm of the destiny, come what may, to achieve his goals! He’ll not (and should not) merely accept what destiny has to offer him. He’ll fight for what he wants for himself.

Men are not prisoners of Fate, but only prisoners of their own minds.

~Franklin Roosevelt

There goes a saying –

“Shallow men believe in luck, strong men believe in cause and effect.”

This holds very true of persons who believe in themselves and in the values of hard work and perseverance. Just because you didn’t get something or couldn’t achieve your cherished goal, even after a lot of hard work and perseverance you shouldn’t settle for something inferior, and most importantly do not blame it on external factors like fate or destiny. Just take a step back, analyze what went wrong and try again.

And this is the thought process which I’ll follow from now on.

“No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.”
― Gautama Buddha

  1. I don’t believe in fate or destiny neither but what if there is a third way – between the conscious acts/ choices/ will and being puppets of the destiny there is something called subconscious memory which has enormous influence on our decisions and deeds.
So what if Lennon saying :“There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be…” meant that everything we do or not do leads us somewhere where we need to be in order to understand ourselves and change our subconscious programs?
I hope it doesn’t sound too complicated. ?

    • Yes. It makes sense. There are choices in front of us at every moment in time and by taking any of those choices, our life might head in a certain direction. And each time we make a choice our subconscious memory as you referred to it as, gets better or at least understand the outcome of that kind of choice. My main point in writing this piece was to downplay the blame we tend to burden the luck factor with, while in fact, we ourselves made those choices or our subconscious programming up to that point lead us to those decisions.Your point makes complete sense.
Thank you for this insight 🙂
